Earlier this week Google announced that Google+ Hangouts on Air would start becoming available to all users worldwide. Initially, only a limited number of users could access the Hangouts on Air feature, so this is definitely an exciting news.

Why is it exciting for musicians ? Simple : now everyone has the ability to broadcast live shows (and it is of course not limited only to performances), with up to 9 other participants and any amount of users who can watch it live.

Very recently, at the Musik & Talang seminar in Turku, Finland, we tested the technology real-time and covered this topic with Josh Urban, a solo rock musician from the States.

In the middle of the presentation (which you can find at the bottom of the post) I revealed the participants (apparently surprising them by that quite a bit) that Josh had been with us in a live Google+ Hangout session. When joined the conversation, Josh talked on how he had been using Google+ Hangouts on Air for engaging with his fans and streaming live concerts. He also answered some of the public questions, including why Google+ Hangout on Air is different from the established services like Ustream.

And Josh couldn’t miss the opportunity to share with the Swedish/Finnish audience few bits of the US culture. Be sure to watch the video in full to not miss it.

Hangouts On Air Features

Hangouts on Air includes the following key features, according to Google :

• Broadcast publicly. By checking ‘Enable Hangouts On Air,’ you can broadcast your live hangout —from the Google+ stream, your YouTube channel or your website — to the entire world.
• See how many viewers you’ve got. During your broadcast, you can look inside the hangout to see how many people are watching live.
• Record and re-share. Once you’re off the air, we’ll upload a public recording to your YouTube channel, and to your original Google+ post. This way it’s easy to share and discuss your broadcast after it’s over.

The feature will be gradually rolling out to users worldwide over the next few weeks.
